The Search
The story begins with a young man who had searched the world far and wide to find an effective manager. He met people from a broad range of professions and organizations. Most of the managers whom he met fell into one of two categories:
Results-oriented - "tough" managers who manage for the bottom line. Their organizations win, their employees lose.
People-oriented - "nice" managers whose employees are happy but whose organizations lose.
The young man defined an effective manager as one whose organizations AND employees won. But the few managers in the world who supposedly met the young man's definition of effective were unwilling to meet with him to disclose the secret of their effectiveness. Finally, after travelling the world, the young man found an effective manager near his hometown, and this manager was willing to meet with him and share his wisdom.
