Leadership Presence

by

Belle Linda Halpern  &  Kathy Lubar

Belle Linda Halpern and Kathy Lubar are two actresses and cofounders of The Ariel Group, a unique leadership consulting firm. In their book, Leadership Presence they describe how to become a more inspiring leader by applying skills from the acting profession to one's role as a leader.

Presence: What Actors Have That Leaders Need

Many people would define presence as the ability to command others' attention, for example, upon walking into a room. This ability is one of the outcomes of what Halpern and Lubar define as presence. In their words, presence is the "ability to connect authentically with the thoughts and feelings of others." According to Halpern and Lubar, this ability is not an inborn trait; it can be developed.

The acting profession is one in which presence is important. Actors develop the ability to connect with their audiences in order to inspire them, show them a new perspective, and even change their opinions. Leaders have the same objectives. Just as actors play different roles, so do leaders within their organizations and personal lives. Halpern and Lubar define leadership presence as the ability to connect authentically with others in order to motivate and inspire them to acheive a particular result. The benefits of leadership presence include improved consensus building, teamwork, and client relationships.
